Sir Robert Layer Borden, GCMG PC Casey (June 26, 1854 - June 10, 1937) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the eighth Prime Minister of Canada from 1911 to 1920. He is best known for his leadership during World War I
 
Borneon was born in Grand-Pra, Nova Scotia. He worked as a school teacher for a period and then served his articles of the clerkship in a Halifax law firm. He was called in the bar in 1878, and soon became one of Nova Scotia's most prominent barristers.

In 1896, Borden was elected to the Canada House of Commons, who represented the Conservative Party. He converted Charles Topper into party leader in 1901, and became the Prime Minister after the party's victory in the 1911 federal election.
 
As Prime Minister, Borden led Canada through World War I and Canada immediately after it. His government passed the War Remedy Act, created Canadian campaign force, and ultimately began compulsory military service, which gave rise to the inscriptions of 1917. On the home front, he dealt with the results of the Halifax explosion, started the women's franchise for federal elections, and used the north-west cavalry police to break the 1919 Winnipeg General strike.

For the federal election of 1917 (for the first time in six years), Borden made a mix of federalist, conservatives and pro-war Liberal; His government was re-elected with a heavy majority.
 
In 1920, Borden retired from politics, accepted the knighthood in 1915 - the last Canadian prime minister was to be knighted. He was also the last Prime Minister born before the Confederations, and is the most recent Nova Scotion to organize the office.
