From the Mahabharata

According to another belief, the beginning of the Chhath festival began in Mahabharata period. First of all the sun worshiper Karna started worshiping the sun god. Karna God was the supreme devotee of the sun. He used to stand in water in the water every day for hours and gave it to Sun God. He became a great warrior only by the grace of God. Even today, this method of Arghya charity is popular in Chhath.
In some stories, the mention of worshiping the sun by the wife of Pandavas, Draupadi too is mentioned. They wished for the good health of their families and regular sun worshiped for a long life.

From mythology

According to one legend, the king did not have any children, then Maharishi Kashyap gave his daughter-in-law a sacrifice and made his wife Malini the sacrifice for sacrificing the yagya. With this effect he had a son, but he was born dead. Priyavad went to the cremation ground and the son started sacrificing life in the disconnection. At the same time, Brahma's mind, Virgo Devasena appeared and said that due to the sixth part of the original trend of creation, I am called Shashti. Hey! You worship my lord and motivate people also to worship. The king made a vow of Goddess Sishthi with the will of the son and he received the son Ratna. This worship was performed on Kartik Shukla Shishthi.
